Yonatan Mendel's Bar Mitzva, Eshchar
Yonatan was thirteen on Friday, November 7, 2014, and was Bar Mitzva the next day, Shabbat, in Eshchar, where he leyned his Torah Portion, Parshat Vayeira, and Maftir, before reading Haftorah Vayeira, Kings
II 4:1-37. He prepared a project as well as a Dvar Torah based on his Portion, delivered before the congregation in the synagogue immediately
following the Hazzan’s Kaddish after Mussaf, and a speech delivered at a lunch the same day.

Yonatan's Bar Mitzva was more than this however, and the full experience was a weekend of peace and enjoyment commencing on Erev Shabbat and ending on Sunday morning, for those who were able to take advantage of the hospitality of "Beit Eshchar" and stay over in zimmers or with our friends.
Starting with Brunch on Thursday, through guests' candle-lighting, Kabbalat Shabbat in the new synagogue, erev-Shabbat meal in the new moadon for guests, friends and relations, Shabbat breakfast in the moadon before Shacharit with Yonatan leyning and then giving a learned Dvar Torah, Kiddush for the whole community, Shabbat lunch for guests, friends and relations, and finally Havdalah at home with us. And for those who stayed overnight to leave on Sunday, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast! Click the icon below to read Michael's description of the weekend.

Yonatan's Bar Mitzva Project, Vayeira: God appeared to him, was hand written by him in both English and Hebrew in one professionally-bound volume, and included his own original artwork, such as the picture of Avraham Avinu hosting the three angels (below); but you can see a PDF version in English here and in Hebrew here.
Taking place entirely on Shabbat, we were unable to take photographs of this simcha, which nevertheless will remain vivid in the minds of all who were there. However there are some photos we took before Shabbat of the dinner setting in the moadon, and there are other related photographs included in the slideshow below.
